SMARTPHONE BUYING GUIDE

How to choose the right smartphone

Use budget, display, performance, battery, camera, software support and storage to narrow the choice before comparing individual models.

1. Start with your real budget

Set a maximum delivered price before looking at specifications. A higher price only makes sense when the extra cost improves something you will actually use, such as the display, camera, performance, battery life, storage or software support.

2. Choose the display for your use

  • AMOLED/OLED: better black levels and contrast; common on mid-range and premium phones.
  • LCD: can still be practical on budget devices; panel quality matters more than the label alone.
  • Refresh rate: 90Hz or 120Hz makes scrolling and animation feel smoother.
  • Resolution and brightness: matter if you read outdoors, watch video or use the phone for long periods.

3. Match performance to workload

For messaging, browsing, payments and streaming, modern mid-range processors are usually sufficient. Gaming, heavy multitasking, video editing and long ownership periods justify stronger chipsets and better thermal management.

4. RAM and storage

  • RAM: more RAM helps with multitasking, but software optimisation also matters.
  • Storage: choose enough internal storage for apps, photos and video; check whether microSD expansion exists before assuming it does.
  • Variant pricing: compare the exact RAM/storage variant because a product family may have several prices.

5. Battery and charging

Battery capacity is only one factor. Screen efficiency, processor efficiency, software and network use affect real endurance. Charging speed is useful, but battery size and long-term ownership needs should be considered together.

6. Camera: look beyond megapixels

Sensor quality, optical stabilisation, lens quality, image processing, telephoto capability and video features can matter more than a large megapixel number. Check whether the phone has the camera types you actually need.

7. Software support and practical ownership

Consider update policy, security support, repair access, warranty terms, ecosystem compatibility and resale value. These factors can matter more over several years than a small benchmark advantage.

8. Compare finalists side by side

After narrowing the shortlist to two to four phones, compare the exact variants, current verified price, major specifications and trade-offs rather than relying on a single headline feature.
